When a New York subway station is torn apart by inconceivably powerful forces, Richard Wentworth––feared by the Underworld as The Spider––springs into action. Prowling by night to intercept the next attack, Wentworth encounters a band of destroyers far different than any who ever challenged him before––a fearless, merciless foe that does not quail before The Spider's menacing laugh and which sheds his avenging bullets without injury. As a reign of sabotage sweeps the nation, the Master of Men realizes that an old enemy has returned from the grave. But which one? There is only a cryptic warning symbol signed with the cruel taunt, “I AM BACK." While The Spider deploys new weapons to combat this horrific challenge, the F.B.I. sends its top man-hunters into the fray, a trio of disgraced agents whose orders are to blast The Spider on sight. Caught between bulletproof Steel Men and Federal guns, The Spider struggles to balk the destruction of Manhattan while facing a personal holocaust….with his unknown enemy determined to permanently brand Richard Wentworth with his own searing symbol of guilt—the seal of The Spider! Guest starring the F.B.I.'s infamous Suicide Squad!
I was not a Spider fan. I had heard of how manic depressive the Pulp hero was, and how the plot often left massive, annoying holes. FURY IN STEEL is free of these problems, and elevates the non-stop action Pulp genre. Will Murray reveals a Pulp New York world we can relate to, where "everyone" knows The Spider's secret identity but ignores it with a wink and a nod -then cranks up the urgency by introducing the FBI's Suicide Squad. Typically The Spider resolves conflicts with blazing .45s, and certainly those smoke wagons are seen aplenty. But the Author cranks up the intensity by providing antagonists that care not a bit about The Spider's .45ACP solutions or his maniacal laugh, and in doing so elevates the hero giving him and his team the opportunity to get creative and effective in new ways.Secondary characters like Ronald Jackson and Ram Singh, assistants to The Spider's war on crime, would normally get little development or screen time. Murray skillfully expands their roles, allowing them to "breathe" but not in a "pad the word count" manner. The characters are loyal to The Master of Men and to his mission, and really shine in contrast to each other and to our pulp protagonist. Pulp heroines usually are cardboard cutouts, pretty faces with no depth. The author showcases Nita Van Sloan's love and commitment to Richard Wentworth, then flips the script to show how tough she can be. This is NOT Margo Lane. The plot Will Murray constructs takes the intensity of a The Spider plot, usually in the upper 8 to 10 range, and moves it to "11". And no dangling plot holes or overwhelming need to suspend disbelief. It IS The Spider though, so there is a massive, bloody body count... our hero isn't wearing Mr. Rogers cardigan sweater. If anything The Spider rises to the occasion with creative planning, preparation, and... violent pulp justice. Rejoice!I wasn't a Spider fan... but I am now.
